Why is this adorable gingerbread man dancing on a kitchen counter?
Is it because he just tasted some delicious homemade butter?
Or is it because he’s made from some delicious homemade butter??
We asked VIVITA crew member, Gina, where did she find the video of the dancing gingerbread man accompanying this VIVITA@HOME recipe. We were amazed to find out that she wanted to explore using Roblox to design an animated video to introduce this fun way of making your very own butter at home! Many of our members took part in our Roblox game design competition recently and created very impressive, colourful and fun games. You guys inspired Gina to have a go at creating in Roblox too!
Let’s all watch her cute video!
How did you come up with the idea for your project?
When I found out that I ran out of butter when I needed it, I thought it would be a good idea to find a way to make my own.
What makes this a cool project?
Rich and delicious butter can be made using only heavy whipping cream and a jar or box with a tight lid. You can also do some arm exercises as a bonus!!
Could you share with us a bit about your prototyping process? What did you learn from the more memorable failed attempts?
Most of the time, it is said if you use a cake mixer to make this butter it will take 5-10 minutes, and that it may take longer by hand. However, I found that if you shake it really hard, it takes no more than 10 minutes. So try out recipes for yourself as you may find your own way of doing things may turn out to be different from other people’s experience!
Making Shake Shake Butter
What materials do you need?
- Heavy whipping cream
What tools do you need?
- A jar or food container with a tight lid
- A spoon
- A strainer (optional)
Step 1: Fill your container with about a 1/2 way with heavy whipped cream and put the lid on tightly.
Step 2: Shake it up!!! We need to shake it for 10-15 minutes. Stop and check at the 5-minute mark and give the arms a bit of a rest.
First, the cream will turn into whipped cream with soft and then stiff peaks (“peaks” are the little mountains of cream that pile on the surface of the mixture when you are stirring a bowl of cream with your spoon or whisk and you lift it up).
You will hear sloshing sounds, then you will begin to feel something more solid hit the side of the jar when the cream starts to break. If you shake very hard, it will take around 10 minutes to separate the butterfat from the liquid.
What just happened?
Heavy cream has fat molecules in a water-based solution. By shaking the cream, several things happen. Not only you are forcing air into it, but also the fat molecules begin to separate from the liquid and start to bind together. The more the cream is shaken the more these fat molecules clump together forming something solid which is the butter.
Step 3: Once the butter is solidified, open up the jar and you will see butter surrounded by a milky substance which is buttermilk. Pour off the buttermilk and save it for baking or cooking. With buttermilk, you can add a soft, rich and creamy quality to your pancakes, biscuits, poundcakes, scones, etc. You can use either a strainer or use your spoon to block the clump of butter while pouring off the buttermilk.
You can add various ingredients to flavour your butter.
For example, I really like to add fresh parsley with a little bit of garlic to butter, which is good when you make garlic bread or goes well with grilled rib-eye steaks.
Try exploring ingredients you have at home in your kitchen and share with us what is your favourite butter recipe!
Could you try to use your buttermilk to bake or cook something?
Pancakes would be a good start!
The mild lactic acid in buttermilk helps keep baked goods moist and tender by breaking down long and tough strands of gluten. It can also be used for making ranch dressing or mashed potatoes.
