Imagine you have shrunk yourself down to a tiny size and you are going on a trip to a fantasy world on your dessert plate! This is exactly the yummy adventure journey that VIVITA Crew member, Gina, is going to share with us now.
How did you come up with the idea for your project?
I thought the bittersweet taste of chocolate describes exactly the situation we are facing. It might not be easy to be stuck at home and not able to meet friends. However, this is also a good chance to have a quality time with your family or even by yourself. Let’s find sweetness in this bitter moment!!
What makes this a cool project?
You want something sweet and you want it right now? It will take only a few minutes to bake this cake, and you will have a soft and moist cake with molten chocolate inside. When it’s still warm, top with vanilla ice cream and enjoy with your family or all by yourself!!
Could you share with us a bit about your prototyping process? What did you learn from the more memorable failed attempts?
I tried not to use a weighing scale when measuring ingredients and used a tablespoon and a cup. To be precise, I would recommend a “dip-and-sweep” method: gather a spoonful of your ingredient, then drag a straight edge, like an edge of a butter knife, or your finger (make it straight of course) across the rim of the spoon to sweep off the excess. For the chocolate, you can refer to the weight on its packaging and work out how much you will need.
It is better to use a short mug with a wide mouth. To find out if it is the right size, pour two cups of water in it and check that it is filled to the top. A small bowl can also be used instead of a mug.
Making A Chocolate Volcano
What materials do you need?
- ¼ cup or 30g of flour
- ¼ cup or 50g of sugar
- 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder
- ½ teaspoon of baking powder
- 3 tablespoons or 45g of butter, melted
- 3 tablespoons or 45ml of milk
- 1 egg
- 30g of chocolate of your choice
- 1 tablespoon or 15ml of water
- Ice cream (optional)
What tools do you need?
- A fork
- A microwave-safe mug or small bowl
- A microwave or an oven
Step 1: Put the flour, sugar, cocoa powder and baking powder into a mug or a bowl and whisk with a fork until all the ingredients are mixed thoroughly.
Step 2: Add in the melted butter, milk and egg. Whisk gently, making sure to mix in the powdered mixture at the bottom.
Step 3: Place the chocolate chunks in the center of the mug or the bowl. There is no need to push them down as the chocolate chunks will sink while baking.
Step 4: Drizzle water right on top of the batter.
Step 5: Bake in the microwave around 1 ½ min until the cake rises to the top. The edge will look set, but the surface of the center will look slightly wet and shiny. Timing will vary as every microwave is different. I recommend starting from 1 minute and 10 seconds. If the center still looks raw then give it another 5 to 10 seconds.
Step 6: Let it cool for 5 minutes so you don’t burn your tongue, and it’s time to enjoy!!
Let’s say you are a patissiere of a restaurant or a cafe and your customers are waiting for you to serve them your delicious chocolate cake. How are you going to decorate your cake for your customer? Other than ice cream, could you suggest any other items that will go well with this cake?
Try variations and create your own mug cake!
