If we collect a lot of plastic bags and home and have run out of ideas to recycle or reuse them, maybe we can turn them into a huge supply of raw materials for crafts. As we are all spending a lot of time at home now, we can really turn a lot of these plastic bags into cheerful gifts or decorations that can light up the lives of the people around us. Our intern Zhi Ru shares this fun activity with us here:
How did you come up with the idea for your project?
I wanted to make something out of plastic bags as it is something very commonly found in homes.
What makes this a cool project?
It’s free, easy to make and looks surprisingly interesting! The pom poms can be used for decorations, gift-wrapping, or as an accessory etc.
Could you share with us a bit about your prototyping process? What did you learn from the more memorable failed attempts?
I realised that it is important to make sure that there is no wind when making things with small and light parts… Halfway through, a gust of the wind blew in and all my little plastic pieces flew away so I had to go and close the windows and pick everything up. 🙁
Making Cheery Pom Poms
What materials do you need?
- Plastic bag(s)
- Rubber bands (or string)
What tools do you need?
Step 1: Smoothen out the creases of the plastic bag and cut off the top and bottom of the plastic bag. The top and bottom part would not be used in this activity to make pom poms. Could you think of other things to make from these cut offs?
Step 2: Cut the middle section into strips.
Step 3: Each strip will form a loop when opened up. Gather all the plastic loops together.
Step 4: Twist the loop such that it forms a figure “8” and loop it down. Repeat this step until you are satisfied with the size/length.
Step 5: Tie the middle with a rubber band (the smaller the better). Make sure that the figure “8” is still clear so that it is easier to cut later.
Step 6: Cut the top and bottom of the figure “8”.
Step 7 : Ruffle the ends to separate them out and trim the uneven ends.
Some examples of what you can do or make with these pom poms…
Could it be made into accessories?
How would you use the pom poms to decorate and transform a corner of your home?
What if the length of the cut loops is shorter or longer?
What if more or less strands were used?
What if you mixed plastic bags of different colours together?
Can you make pom poms out of other materials? For example, yarn, old clothes, paper??
Do you have an idea of how you can make super large cheerleader sized pom poms? Then maybe you can compose your own cheer and make a cheer routine video to bring encouragement and fun to everyone!
